Why coaching helps

Zwift racing is its own discipline

If you’ve raced outside, your first Zwift race will humble you. Everything happens from the gun: no neutral rollout, no sitting in while the break sorts itself out. The draft is real but behaves differently. Races are decided in 20 to 60 minutes of near-constant pressure, and the finish comes down to a sprint you’ve been softening up for the whole race — or that’s been softening you up.

None of that is a reason to avoid it. It’s the reason to learn it.

Zwift is the most accessible racing in cycling — no travel, no entry fee, a start line every hour — and it builds exactly the repeatable high-end power that wins races outside. Most riders lose their first races to fixable things: a bad start, poor positioning, inaccurate power, a trainer setup working against them. Those are coaching problems, and they’re quick to solve.

What we work on

From pairing screen to podium

Setup and calibration

Bad data loses races before they start. Trainer setup and pairing, accurate power (and dual recording if you want receipts), cooling and fueling for indoor efforts, ERG vs. sim, and getting your Zwift Racing Score and profile squared away.

Race craft

Picking the right events, warming up for a race that starts at full gas, surviving the first three minutes, holding position in the pack, spending PowerUps at the right moment, and timing the sprint instead of leading it out for someone else.

Training that matches the racing

Hard starts, over-unders, anaerobic repeatability — intervals built for how Zwift races are actually won. Using races as workouts inside a structured week, and keeping indoor racing from wrecking your outdoor season. Or making it the season.

A calendar worth racing

From your first community race to Zwift Racing League, club series, and — if you want it — a run at Esports Nationals. We pick events that match your score, your schedule, and your goals, then build toward them.

Coach Theia

Coached by someone who still clips in

Theia has raced on Zwift since 2016. She’s a two-time USA Cycling Esports National Champion (2022, 2024), the 2026 Illinois Road Race State Champion, and has coached hundreds of athletes across road, gravel, cyclocross, and virtual racing since founding 360 VELO in 2018.

When she talks about holding position in a Zwift blob, it’s because she did it last Tuesday.

Common questions

Before your first race

Do I need an expensive smart trainer to race?

No. You need a power source that’s accurate and consistent — a smart trainer or a power meter on a basic trainer both work. Consistency matters more than price. Sorting out what you have (or what’s actually worth buying) is a common consult topic.

What category will I race in?

Zwift seeds racers by Racing Score, a number built from your recent results and efforts, so you’re matched against riders of similar ability from your very first event. You don’t need to be fast to have a good race — you need a group that matches you, and Zwift handles that.

I’ve never raced anything. Can I start on Zwift?

It’s the best place to start. Races are short, stakes are low, nobody crashes, and there’s a start line every hour. You’ll learn pack racing instincts in a month that take seasons to build outdoors.

Will Zwift racing make me faster outdoors?

Yes — it’s one of the best training stimuli in cycling. The repeated hard starts, surges, and sustained pressure build exactly the repeatability that road and gravel races demand. Many of our athletes race indoors all winter and start spring fitter than they’ve ever been.
